How To Get An Umbreon In Pokemon Go

As Eevee is the star of the August Pokémon Go Community Day on 14 and 15 August, it's time to plan what evolutions you want for your killer collection. But all Eevee evolutions are not created equal.

Each of Eevee's eight evolutions has different stats and weaknesses. Knowing these will help you choose what to keep from your mega Community Day haul.

All eight 'Eeveelutions' are now available in Pokémon GO: Sylveon, Umbreon, Espeon, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Leafeon and Glaceon.

In the "classic" Pokémon games, this particular monster is able to evolve into different types depending on what special items you have, its happiness level, the moves it has unlocked and the time of day. Thankfully you don't have to jump through those kinds of hoops in Pokémon GO.

Instead, you can simply rename your Eevee to one of eight different names to guarantee a particular evolution, or employ some other tricks to get your desired Eevee evolution. There are a few caveats, but these methods definitely work.

How To Rename Eevee To Evolve Into Sylveon, Leafeon, Glaceon, Umbreon, Espeon, Vaporeon, Jolteon, And Flareon

Evolving Eevee using the required 25 Eevee candy will produce a random evolution. However, you can control which type it turns into by renaming the monster beforehand:

Rename "Kira" to evolve into Fairy-type Sylveon
Rename "Linnea" to evolve into Grass-type Leafeon
Rename "Rea" to evolve into Ice-type Glaceon
Rename "Sakura" to evolve into Psychic-type Espeon
Rename "Tamao" to evolve into Dark-type Umbreon
Rename "Rainer" to evolve into Water-type Vaporeon
Rename "Sparky" to evolve into Electric-type Jolteon
Rename "Pyro" to evolve into Fire-type Flareon

There are some caveats here. This only works one time per evolution, so if you plan to use your Eeveelution in battle, make sure you've chosen an Eevee with favourable stats. The naming trick is currently the only guaranteed way to evolve Vaporeon, Jolteon or Flareon - once you've done it once, it'll be up to random chance if you get another, regardless of what you've named it.

How To Evolve Multiple Umbreons And Espeons

A second method of evolving Eevee into Umbreon and Espeon exists, and it's surprisingly easy. Simply make Eevee your buddy Pokémon and walk 10km. You can then evolve your Eevee (as your assigned buddy) at night to unlock Umbreon, or during the day for Espeon. You can easily tell if it's day or night by looking at the colour of your map or listening to the game's music, but ensure that you have good signal before evolving - the game needs to know the time of day in your exact location and if your signal drops at the wrong moment, you'll get a Vaporeon, Jolteon or Flareon no matter how far you've walked.

There's also another method to evolve Eevee into Leafeon and Glaceon - perhaps the most obvious way if you've had a look in the game's shop.

Available from the in-game store for 200 coins apiece, the Mossy and Glacial Lure Modules work just like the ordinary Lure Modules in the game. Simply buy whichever one takes your fancy (or both, if you prefer) and use it on a nearby PokéStop.

You'll notice that it attracts specific types of Pokémon to your area, but click on one of the Eevees in your collection while within range of the PokéStop and you'll see that its evolution button has changed to the respective target evolution. Hit the button and Eevee will evolve into Leafeon or Glaceon right before your eyes (as long as you have 25 Eevee candy ready to go, of course).

Make sure you're within range of the PokéStop and that the evolution button is indicating a new evolution before you press it, rather than displaying the usual Eevee question mark symbol.

It's also worth noting that these Lure Modules behave just like the ordinary variants within the game. This means that if another player has used a special Eevee Lure Module on a nearby PokéStop, you can swoop in and use it to evolve your own Eevee. (Note that other players will also be able to benefit from your Module, too).

On Eevee Community Day, the most important things you need to do are:

Catch 'em all!

You may never get another chance to catch so many Eevee, so don't be stingy with your Poké Balls.

Capture as many Eevee as you can, check your catch every 30 minutes or so to see how many 3 star cuties you've caught, and throw away what you don't need to make room in your Pokémon storage.

Keep Plenty Of 3 Star Eevee To Evolve

You can read about Eevee evolutions and what you need to do to get them.

You will also need to use special lures to get some Eevee evolutions.

You'll need to evolve Eevee during the Community Day event to get special moves that may not be available again, and there's some work involved to get the trickier evolutions.

Serious collectors will want to keep Eevee evolutions with the special Community Day moves, and also have a powerful evolution to teach the best attack and defensive moves listed on this page.

So plan ahead and don't throw away any 3 star Eevee until you know you have everything you need.

Keep All Your Shinies

There are lots of Eevee evolutions to collect, and if you're a crazy collector you'll also want to have both male and female versions.

After using the Eevee name trick, you can't always choose which evolution you get. So make sure to collect plenty of shinies so you can have another shot if you get any doubles.

Also, who knows what Eevee evolutions there will be in the future? Keep plenty of shinies in your Pokémon storage to future-proof your collection.

Best Eevee Evolutions Ranked

We ranked Eevee's evolutions based on their statistics in raids, gym battles, clashes with Team GO Rocket grunts and other in-game skirmishes.

We also looked at each evolution's strengths and weaknesses against other Pokémon types.

Aside from hard-hitter Espeon, there are better Pokémon to use in player vs player (PvP) matches. So we based our rankings on in-game combat, as that's where you're most likely to use your Eeveelutions.

But if you follow our tips and think about how the types of Pokémon the Eevee evolutions are weak or strong against, you can build an impressive pool of evolutions for your PvP team.

Of course, everyone has their favourite Eevee evolution. Many players have nurtured Jolteon, Leafeon and Umbreon to become key members of their battle team.

Eevee evolutions also live or die depending on the Pokémon type they're battling, so even the lower-ranked evolutions can have their moment of glory.

Our winner is Espeon, a powerful psychic Pokémon from the Johto region.

Espeon has the highest combat power (CP) and attack stats of any Eevee evolution, making it a formidable fighter for both in-game and PvP battles.

If you catch a perfect Eevee and you're not sure what to do with it, Espeon would be our evolution of choice.

The battle for second place was close, but we reckon Vaporeon pips Glaceon to the post.

Although Glaceon narrowly beats Vaporeon in CP, Vaporeon has fewer weaknesses against Pokémon types and is a more flexible choice when you don't know what you're up against.

Vaporeon has a been a fan favourite since the get-GO in 2016, and is a dependable water type choice if you haven't been able to get your hands on a tasty Kyogre.

If it weren't for its long list of Pokémon type weaknesses, Glaceon may have squeaked into second place.

But third place ain't bad for a newcomer from the Sinnoh region that made its Pokémon GO debut in 2020.

Glaceon's high CP make it a hardy choice for your battle party. But as it only gets a weather boost when it's snowing, Glaceon is an unwise choice for trainers in more temperate climes.

Flareon's CP and attack also make it a capable fighter, but other fire types such as Charizard, Moltres and Entei are better when you want to leave your enemies singed and smoking.

But as it's easier to collect candy for Eevee than other hard-hitting fire Pokémon, it's quicker to power up a kick-ass Flareon to turn up the heat.

Sylveon

Fairy type Sylveon is the latest Eevee evolution to hit Pokémon GO, and has already made an impact by knocking some old favourites down the list.

Its impressive defence and stamina make Sylveon a decent choice when you need a defender, and we've had success when using this evolution to hold on to gyms.

But Sylveon doesn't hit as hard as other popular fairy types such as Togekiss and Gardevoir, so you may want to hold it back if you have another fairy type for ghost, dark or psychic encounters.

If our rankings were based purely on looks, pretty goth Umbreon would win hands down with its sleek coat and piercing red eyes.

Umbreon lags behind other Eevee evolutions in CP and attack, making it a walkover if you're taking down gyms or fighting Team GO Rocket.

But Umbreon is a solid choice if you need a defensive tank to keep gym attackers at bay, and is also a favourite in PvP Great League and Ultra League battles.

Jolteon is the lowest-placed Eevee evolution from the original Pokémon GO trio, but there are times when ol' sparky can be a shocking success.

Jolteon is only weak against ground types, which makes it reliable if you're ploughing through Team GO Rocket grunt battles and you've run out of items to revive your best electric types.

Jolteon also holds its own in CP, and is a dependable choice for electrocuting opponents.

Poor old Leafeon. Although it looks cool, there are better grass types you can use to build an awesome team. So it's best to let Leafeon take root on the bench.

Leafeon is also weak to 5 Pokémon types, making it an unwise choice in situations such as Team GO Rocket grunt battles where you may not be able to predict what's coming next.

Oh well, one Eevee evolution had to come last. But as this Pokémon is said to combat air pollution as it sleeps, it's a lover not a fighter. And we respect that.
